Strengthening Cooperation Against Antisemitic Crimes: The\nEXODUS Project Event in Thessaloniki<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Introduction<\/b><\/span><\/p>

The<\/span> EXODUS<\/span> EU<\/span> Project<\/span> is<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> forefront<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> \ufb01ght<\/span> against<\/span> antisemitic<\/span> crimes,<\/span> seeking<\/span> to<\/span> develop<\/span> effective<\/span> practices<\/span> and<\/span> enhance<\/span> cooperation<\/span> among<\/span> stakeholders.<\/span> A<\/span> signi\ufb01cant<\/span> step<\/span> towards<\/span> these<\/span> goals<\/span> was<\/span> the<\/span> organization<\/span> of<\/span> a<\/span> workshop<\/span> in<\/span> Thessaloniki,<\/span> held<\/span> from<\/span> January<\/span> 26-28,<\/span> 2025,<\/span> coinciding<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> International<\/span> Holocaust<\/span> Remembrance<\/span> Day.<\/span> This<\/span> pivotal<\/span> event<\/span> aimed<\/span> to<\/span> strengthen<\/span> collaboration, develop effective strategies against antisemitic behavior and prejudice, and explore<\/span> the<\/span> European<\/span> dimension<\/span> of<\/span> antisemitism.<\/span><\/p>

Partners<\/b><\/span> <\/b>and<\/b><\/span> <\/b>Panel<\/b><\/span> <\/b>Participants<\/b><\/span><\/p>

The<\/span> workshop<\/span> was<\/span> a<\/span> collaborative<\/span> effort,<\/span> between<\/span> the<\/span> Athens<\/span> Lifelong<\/span> Learning<\/span> Institute,<\/span> the<\/span> Center<\/span> for<\/span> Security<\/span> Studies<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> Jewish<\/span> Community<\/span> of<\/span> Thessaloniki<\/span> playing<\/span> a<\/span> key<\/span> role<\/span> in<\/span> its<\/span> design<\/span> and<\/span> implementation.<\/span> The<\/span> event<\/span> saw<\/span> active<\/span> participation<\/span> from<\/span> a<\/span> diverse<\/span> group<\/span> of<\/span> stakeholders,<\/span> including<\/span> police<\/span> and<\/span> judicial<\/span> authorities,<\/span> members<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Jewish<\/span> Community<\/span> of<\/span> Thessaloniki,<\/span> institutions,<\/span> organizations,<\/span> and<\/span> European<\/span> experts.<\/span><\/p>

Distinguished<\/span> speakers<\/span> and<\/span> panelists<\/span> contributed<\/span> their<\/span> expertise<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> discussions.<\/span> Mr.<\/span> Lazaros Se\ufb01ha,<\/span> Vice<\/span> President<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Jewish<\/span> Community<\/span> of<\/span> Thessaloniki,<\/span> delivered<\/span> the<\/span> opening<\/span> speech.<\/span> Mrs.<\/span> Chryssoula<\/span> Aliferi,<\/span> Ambassador<\/span> \u2013<\/span> Special<\/span> Envoy<\/span> for<\/span> Combating<\/span> Antisemitism<\/span> and<\/span> Defending<\/span> the Memory<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Holocaust,<\/span> and<\/span> Mrs.<\/span> E\ufb01<\/span> Theodoraki,<\/span> Deputy<\/span> Mayor<\/span> of<\/span> Education<\/span> &<\/span> Lifelong<\/span> Learning<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> Municipality<\/span> of<\/span> Thessaloniki,<\/span> also<\/span> addressed<\/span> the<\/span> event.<\/span> Panelists<\/span> included<\/span> representatives from<\/span> the<\/span> World<\/span> Jewish<\/span> Congress,<\/span> the<\/span> Greek<\/span> National<\/span> Commission<\/span> for<\/span> Human<\/span> Rights<\/span> (GNCHR),<\/span> DAKA<\/span> Solutions,<\/span> the<\/span> European<\/span> Commission<\/span> against<\/span> Racism<\/span> and<\/span> Intolerance<\/span> (ECRI),<\/span> the<\/span> European Union<\/span> Agency<\/span> for<\/span> Fundamental<\/span> Rights<\/span> (FRA),<\/span> the<\/span> Aristotle<\/span> University<\/span> of<\/span> Thessaloniki,<\/span> The<\/span> European Union<\/span> Agency<\/span> for<\/span> Law<\/span> Enforcement<\/span> Training<\/span> (CEPOL),<\/span> the<\/span> Ministry<\/span> of<\/span> Interior<\/span> of<\/span> Finland<\/span> and<\/span> the Ministry<\/span> of<\/span> Justice<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Hellenic<\/span> Republic.<\/span><\/p>

Summary of Findings The workshop facilitated fruitful discussions and exchange of views on critical issues related to combating antisemitism. Key topics included:<\/p>

\u2022 De\ufb01ning antisemitic behavior and symbolism.\u00a0<\/p>

\u2022 Recognizing antisemitic prejudice indicators and hate behaviors.\u00a0<\/p>

\u2022 Exploring the European dimension of antisemitism.\u00a0<\/p>

\u2022 Developing international strategies for confrontation.\u00a0<\/p>

\u2022 Addressing the roles and operational needs of involved agencies.\u00a0<\/p>

\u2022 Discussing educational needs and requirements for combating anti-Semitic crimes.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of synergies in research, with presentations from the SPIRIT and PARTES projects, focusing on hate crimes against religions and minorities.<\/p>

Next Steps\u00a0<\/p>

The outcomes of the workshop are crucial for the advancement of the EXODUS project’s objectives. Speci\ufb01cally, the insights gained will contribute to the drafting of the report focusing on “Antisemitic crimes’ stakeholders training needs” (Deliverable 2.3). This deliverable aims to assess stakeholders’ training needs through focus group discussions and interviews with experts, ultimately leading to a more effective training content and curriculum, which will lead to developing the necessary skills among law enforcement officers and relevant stakeholders for the identi\ufb01cation, investigation, prosecution, and victim assistance of antisemitic crimes.
